Strengthening in Force

The Strongest-on-Record Question, and the Monsoon Deficit — Niño 3.4 at +1.7°C, Very-Strong Odds to 81%, and India’s Season Suppressed From the Start.

The Trajectory

From “how big” to “is this the strongest on record?”

If June confirmed the event’s existence, July confirmed its trajectory. The weekly Niño 3.4 anomaly has surged to +1.7°C by mid-June, up sharply from the ~+0.7°C at the Advisory, and the model ensemble has trended warmer month-on-month. NOAA’s July discussion now puts the very-strong probability near 81% for October–December, up from 63% in June, and ECMWF’s members project a peak between +3.0°C and +4.0°C by late autumn — territory that would challenge the 2015–16 record. The debate has shifted again. Meanwhile the first real-world impact has landed hard: India’s monsoon opened with a severe June deficit.

Current ENSO Status — July 9, 2026 El Niño Advisory, strengthening rapidly. Weekly Niño 3.4 near +1.7°C (mid-June), a +1.5°C three-month move among the fastest on record. NOAA: ~81% chance of a very strong event (peak ≥ +2.0°C) in Oct–Dec; ~97% persistence into early spring 2027. ECMWF ensemble peaks +3.0°C to +4.0°C by late fall; GFDL’s July run has all 30 members historic-class. Coupling fully established. Remaining uncertainty is magnitude (very strong vs record) and peak timing — not direction.

The three-month arc is the clearest signal: the very-strong probability moved from below 37% (May) to 63% (June) to ~81% (July), and the surface index roughly tripled from +0.5°C to +1.7°C over the same window. The 2014-style stall the spring analysis flagged as the downside case — a subsurface reservoir discharged by an untimely easterly burst — did not materialise; the heat has fed the surface cleanly.

Read the Timeline Correctly Persistence probability is near-certain (~97–98%) through the second half of 2026 and declines only in spring–summer 2027 — that fall is the expected end-of-event decay, not a weakening now. El Niño events peak in NH winter and fade the following spring; GFDL’s July run explicitly projects weakening into spring 2027. Both hold at once: near-certain to persist through 2026, increasingly likely to peak very strong, and expected to decay through 2027. Do not read the 2027 decline as the event losing strength this year.
India Monsoon — the First Hard Impact

A late onset and a severe June deficit

The spring thesis held that a Super El Niño peaks after the monsoon, so the season would largely escape it. For 2026 that proved too optimistic: the event strengthened early enough to suppress rainfall from the start. IMD declared Kerala onset on June 4 — three days late, not early as the pre-season forecasts suggested. June then came in with a ~40% all-India rainfall deficit (central India near 50%), driven by the strengthening El Niño, an unfavourable MJO, and a lack of low-pressure systems.

The Transmission Channel to Watch The reservoir buffer entered the season above its ten-year average, so this remains a food-price story, not a supply-collapse story — but a ~40% June deficit draws that buffer down faster than a normal year. Peak food-inflation pressure would land in Oct–Dec 2026, coinciding with the strongest El Niño phase and pre-Budget sensitivity. July revival now depends on the Somali Jet and low-pressure formation in the Bay of Bengal; the season needs a strong recovery just to reach “below normal.”

Positioning into a very-strong peak

Atlantic Hurricanes

Suppression thesis reinforced — stronger El Niño, stronger shear — but the Aug–Oct peak is now, and one landfall rewrites the severity math regardless of count.

US Insurance

Frequency tilt favours SCS-exposed Midwest/Plains primaries; coastal and reinsurance names are the more hedged severity-and-pricing story.

Commodities

Crop-specific divergence sharpens — El Niño supports soybeans, pressures corn and wheat — and India’s deficit adds a price overlay on pulses and oilseeds.

Energy

A warm-north 2026–27 winter argues for softer US heating demand and gas prices; the eventual ENSO transition to La Niña is the multi-season reversal to watch.
