Watch becomes Advisory — the event is present, not forecast
The spring’s central uncertainty has resolved. On June 11, 2026, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center upgraded its alert from El Niño Watch to El Niño Advisory. The wording is the whole story: a Watch means an event is likely to form; an Advisory means it has arrived. El Niño conditions are now present in the equatorial Pacific, the atmosphere is visibly coupling, and the central forecast is for strengthening through the 2026–27 Northern Hemisphere winter. The May update asked “will it develop and sustain?” — June answered yes on both, and moved the debate to a harder question: how big.

Subsurface Kelvin wave (50–250m)
The pace of escalation is itself the signal. In the May discussion, no single strength category exceeded 37% and forecasters stressed spring-predictability-barrier uncertainty. One month later, the Advisory is issued and the very-strong probability sits at 63%. That reflects a subsurface signal that has continued to build rather than discharge: a massive downwelling Kelvin wave carrying subsurface anomalies in the +8°C range at 50–250m depth is propagating east — running warmer than the 1997–98 event at the same calendar stage.
The atmosphere has joined the ocean
The decisive variable through the spring was whether the atmosphere would couple to the warming ocean — the failure mode that made 2023 a peak-and-fade rather than a sustained event. June resolved it. Trade winds weakened decisively, deep convection shifted from Indonesia toward the central and eastern Pacific, and the SOI turned firmly negative. This is the Bjerknes feedback locking in: warm water weakens the trades, weaker trades allow more warming, and the loop becomes self-sustaining. The structural question of the event’s existence is now settled.

What the Advisory changes for positioning
The Advisory converts a probabilistic tilt into a base case, and the transmission channels tracked across this series shift from “watch” to “position.”
Atlantic Hurricanes
NOAA’s May 22 outlook already leaned below-normal (8–14 named storms, 55% chance of a below-normal season) as shear suppresses activity. One landfall still rewrites the severity math.
Indian Monsoon
The early-strengthening event is already suppressing rainfall. IMD’s below-normal call gains weight; the June-deficit data lands in the July update.
Commodities
Cocoa, coffee and grains are first to price the escalation. The crop-specific split matters: El Niño helps soybeans, pressures corn and wheat.
