From “how big” to “is this the strongest on record?”
If June confirmed the event’s existence, July confirmed its trajectory. The weekly Niño 3.4 anomaly has surged to +1.7°C by mid-June, up sharply from the ~+0.7°C at the Advisory, and the model ensemble has trended warmer month-on-month. NOAA’s July discussion now puts the very-strong probability near 81% for October–December, up from 63% in June, and ECMWF’s members project a peak between +3.0°C and +4.0°C by late autumn — territory that would challenge the 2015–16 record. The debate has shifted again. Meanwhile the first real-world impact has landed hard: India’s monsoon opened with a severe June deficit.

The three-month arc is the clearest signal: the very-strong probability moved from below 37% (May) to 63% (June) to ~81% (July), and the surface index roughly tripled from +0.5°C to +1.7°C over the same window. The 2014-style stall the spring analysis flagged as the downside case — a subsurface reservoir discharged by an untimely easterly burst — did not materialise; the heat has fed the surface cleanly.

A late onset and a severe June deficit
The spring thesis held that a Super El Niño peaks after the monsoon, so the season would largely escape it. For 2026 that proved too optimistic: the event strengthened early enough to suppress rainfall from the start. IMD declared Kerala onset on June 4 — three days late, not early as the pre-season forecasts suggested. June then came in with a ~40% all-India rainfall deficit (central India near 50%), driven by the strengthening El Niño, an unfavourable MJO, and a lack of low-pressure systems.
